In 1968, a committee of Gold Star Mothers in central Massachusetts made the humanitarian decision to build a hospital in the central highlands of Vietnam in memory of their sons who were killed or missing in action in Vietnam. A few years later, four of those Gold Star mothers, along with Francis R. Carroll, past Commander of Vernon Hill American Legion Post 435 in Worcester, dedicated the Living Memorial Hospital in Lien Hiep, Vietnam.
On Sunday, November 14, 2021, Gold Star Families joined Carroll, Congressman Jim McGovern, Mayor Joseph Petty, and Doctors Jim Turpin and Thomas Pezzella to pay tribute to the hospital and memorialize the 147 men from Worcester County who died or were missing in action in the Vietnam War.
