On this episode of the Human Touch, host Augustine Kanjia is happy to welcome Bwema Matata, a PhD Candidate in Social Work at Walla Walla University, who was displaced as a student from his home province of South Kivu in the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo), a region sharing much of it's borders with Rwanda and deeply scarred by years of wars triggered largely by the Rwandan genocide. He gives some background on the instability that the DRC faces, from regional conflicts and forced civilian displacement causing an immigration crisis, to exploitative resource extraction, political nepotism and human rights violations. He outlines how social work and youth engagement can help connect the disparate groups within his home country and help sweep away political and economic corruption.
