In this second episode of a two-part series on Close to Home, host Maureen Schwab welcomes Dr. Madeline Colon-Usowicz to discuss the sacred image of The Blessed Mother (Our Lady of Guadalupe) which appeared miraculously on Juan Diego's tilma, or traditional Mexican cloak, in 1531 in what is present-day Mexico City. The image has served for nearly 500 years as a central religious and cultural symbol of Mexico, first helping to evangelize amongst native populations and eventually becoming venerated throughout the entire Catholic world. Today, the basilica housing the original is the most-visited Catholic shrine in the world, and the world's third most-visited sacred site.
